On October 17, 2018, at a peer support group, military or veteran relatives with operational stress injuries came together to share a unique moment around a unique percussion instrument: the djembe.

This evening, held in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, was organized by the family component of the Operational Stress Injury Social Support (OSISS) program, often better known by the acronym OSISS. It is an organization of the Joint Personnel Support Unit (JPSU) of the Department of National Defense in Montérégie.

Music contributes to the general well-being of those who practice it. When people listen to or play an instrument in unison, they improve their social interactions and share emotions. Relationships are created between them, making them want to maintain the bonds that unite them. At the end of the day, the group is strengthened.

Be transported by the energy of the djembe

A dozen women, spouses or relatives of a wounded soldier or veteran, had the pleasure of benefiting from the teachings of Mr. Eric Lafontaine, a specialist of the Djembe, this African tamtam. Instruments of various origins and sizes, arranged in a circle in the room, awaited the participants.
Each could choose his instrument and it took only a few minutes for them to enter the passionate world of Mr. Lafontaine. They let themselves go to the rhythm of the music, even improvising with the inspiration of the moment. The session was held in laughter and joy.

This evening filled with positive emotions was a success thanks to the contribution of the  Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. OSISS would like to thank Debra Viskelis, Service Officer, for her generosity and attention to Veterans and families in the military community.
